The Villa of Mysteries

The Villa of Mysteries is located a short walk from the Herculaneum gate of the city.  This large villa has many unique features including an area for pressing grapes, living quarters and kitchens near the perisytlium with two ovens.  Most fascinating is the triclinium walls with images of a secret ritual, hence the name the room of mysteries.  The scenes, alluding to the cult of Dionysus fill the walls in rich, vibrant colors.  See the images below for an explanation of the wall paintings.  View the video for a more in-depth look at the interior of the villa.  Map #22
