Archaeology:  Roads, Fountains, and Archaeologists of Pompeii

I met many wonderful archaeologists during my visit.  They allowed me to video them as well as to take pictures while the worked.  Please view the images and videos below to understand how they work to excavate and preserve these ruins.

Roman Roads

Picture
Notice the wheel marks on the roads.  Carts and carriages had the same size axles so they could easily pass through the streets.

The stepping stones within the roads tell us about the road.  1 stone denotes a one-way street.  2 stones denote a two-way street while 3 stones denote a major thoroughfare.

Roman Fountains

There are many public fountains in Pompeii (1st image).  You can still drink from these fountains as you visit the city on a hot summer day.  The water tastes good, is nice and cold, and is perfectly safe to drink.  There are also many fountain in Herculaneum (2nd image)
